At its best, which is a word one should not use about this film, it's how you imagined it. Apparently however, whether because of a lack of creativity or despite it, this film is extremely uncreative.

The most positive thing I can say about this movie is that it adheres to the formula very faithfully and it is not an unapologetic butchery like the new Star Wars.
The movie no doubt has some flaws, but I'm giving it a 10 to balance out some unreasonably negative reviews on here, some of which read like they were written by people who have no seen the movie. To sum up how good this film is, it was the second movie in which I've ever witnessed the theatre audience erupting into a round of applause when the credits rolled (the first was Interstellar). The entire score evokes a sense of adventure and riding over the waves and is simply sublime. The soundtrack is also exceptional, so much so that my 5 year old girl made me order the album after the film. Unlike other Disney movies (and most movies in fact), Moana is perfectly capable of pursuing her goals completely by herself and doesn't have a love interest, which I think may be a first for a Disney film (it's actually a lot closer to a Miyazaki film in the way the hero is portrayed). Thinking back to the original Toy Story, things have certainly come far. The animation is second to none, at one point I had to do a double take that they didn't mix in a live action character. It follows the classic "quest" type story of a girl growing up feeling she's destined for more than her quiet life and eventually finding she's the chosen one to go on a mission to save the world, but how it gets there is awe inspiring. This film is an epic in the truest sense and easily one of Disney's best "Big Films". I conclude that this movie sucks Pele's cha cha. Sure, why not?! I can't say I have ever respected Dwayne the Rock as an actor either, Vin Diesel would have been way better. No, instead the reference was Bruddah Iz! Yes, the immensely obese and recently deceased Ukelele player. It's obvious the references used for the character were not the images from actual Hawaiian legends. Worst of all was the use of the encouraging phrase, "OK now go save the world!" as if the writers are making fun of how cliché their own plot is. Love him in Flight of the Concords, hate him in this movie. Jemaine Clement's cameo was a disappointment, the best actor given the smallest role and a lame song to boot. The antagonist was horribly underdeveloped. I can't say lame enough when it comes to the music.
Auli'i Cravalho is the only singer with talent, and unfortunately for her the songwriter was super lame.
The music is awful and more African than Polonesian. This is an example of an actual legend that has been Disneypulated into a pile of cliché plot twists in a tale that is nothing like any Hawaiian legend you have ever heard. Growing up I heard many legends about the Hawaiian hero Maui, many many legends and ANY of them would have made a better plot for this film. I was born in Maui, lived there for 13 years and my sister is named Moana.
